The HOOKED blog has been on a bit of a vacation while we Galveston refugees try to sort out our lives after Hurricane Ike (this particular one at least having the luxury of a hotel room and an Internet connection). In socialized medical systems, the doctors work directly for the state. In Canada (and many other countries with universal care), doctors run their own private practices, just like they do in the US.
